Dance in the streets with Home

22 Feb 2012

If you fancy yourself as a bit of a dancer, or have ever had that urge to start dancing in the street, this is your perfect opportunity.

International Dance Festival Birmingham (IDFB 2012) is creating a brand new dance production which will feature 1,000 people from Birmingham, who will surprise shoppers, commuters and city workers with ‘pop-up’ performances in the streets during the Festival in April and May.

The project – Home – will see individual and group performances in Victoria Square, New Street, High Street and Brindley Place, with participants performing on doormats every day for three weeks, culminating in a massed performance on Sunday 13 May.

Creative workshops, led by artistic tutors are currently taking place, to help individuals create their own performance based on what ‘home’ means to them. The workshops are being held in community locations (schools, community centres, social clubs) and two Free Open Days will take place on 25 February and 10 March at DanceXchange (at the Hippodrome).

Birmingham-based charity St Basils is taking part in the project, with participation by a group of young people who are currently being helped by the charity. They will be coming together for a dance workshop on 21 February, to create their own dances and will then perform in the streets of Birmingham as part of the Home extravaganza in April and May.

As one of the centerpieces of IDFB 2012 during April and May, Home is part of Dancing for the Games, which is inspired by London 2012 and part of the Cultural Olympiad in the West Midlands.
