Ballet, Birmingham and Me
In autumn 2010 Birmingham Royal Ballet (BRB) staged two versions of Cinderella. The first toured Britain and was performed by BRB’s professional company of dancers. The second featured the same score, was designed on the same scale and had the same ambitious production values, but had a very different choreographic team.
BRB worked with Birmingham Youth Services and Birmingham Association of Youth Clubs to develop Ballet, Birmingham and Me. Over 18 months young people from across Birmingham took ballet lessons with professional dancers, courses in lighting, set design and costume from BRB’s production team and wrote their own version of the story.
The hard work paid off on an evening in December 2010 when this new version of Cinderella was performed at Birmingham Hippodrome.
